CCSA Championship Results Day 2
EMERSON, Ga. - The second day of the 2016 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Beach Volleyball Championship saw Florida State and Georgia State win group play, while LSU and South Carolina advanced to the semifinals with victories in the afternoon.
Group Play Recap
In the early morning session, Georgia State secured a bye into the semifinals with a 5-0 win over Tulane to go undefeated in group play. Four of the five matches were straight-set victories, while at the No. 1 position Jansen Button and Sara Olivova won in three sets. In the other match, FIU defeated FAU 3-2 to clinch the second spot in Group 2 and move into the quarterfinals. The Panthers got wins at the No. 2, 3 and 4 positions to clinch the match.
In Group 1 action, Florida State left no doubt as they defeated UAB 5-0 to secure the top spot and a bye into the semifinals. Again four of the five matches were won in straight-sets, while the top pair of Julie Brown and Jace Pardon won 15-5 in the third. LSU picked up a 5-0 win in the other matchup against South Carolina to finish group play in second, with the Gamecocks in third place. Both advanced to play in the afternoon quarterfinals.
Quarterfinals Recap
In the first quarterfinal matchup, the sixth-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks upset the third-seeded Florida International Panthers 4-1 to advance to the semifinals. The top pair of Julia Mannisto and Shannon Williams won the battle at No. 1 in straight-sets. At the No. 2 spot, Sarah Blomgren and Aubrey Ezell followed suit to give the Gamecocks control of the match. The match was won at the No. 5 position where Erin Neuenfeldt and Litsa Darby came back from a set down to win in three. Macie Tendrich and Katie Reilly also won in three sets, while FIU's only win came at the No. 4 position from Aren Cupp and Tina Toghyani. The Gamecocks will now take on Florida State in tomorrow's first semifinal at 8 a.m. ET.
The second quarterfinal between LSU and Florida Atlantic was an absolute thriller with the Tigers advancing to the semifinals with a 3-2 victory. Four of the five matches went to three sets with the deciding match being played on the No. 1 court. At the No. 5 court, Cheyenne Wood and Megan Davenport gave LSU a 1-0 lead as they won in straight-sets. FAU equalized with a win at the No. 4 court, and then took the lead at No. 3 where Andrea Galinis and Chelsey Tekavec won 15-13 in the third to put the Owls up 2-1.
On court No. 2, Helen Boyle and Lilly Kessler took the third set 15-10, setting the stage for Katie Lindelow and Ashley Allmer as both teams and fans gathered around the court for the final points. Lindelow and Allmer came from behind to win the second set 21-17 and the third 15-13 to clinch the victory. LSU will now play Georgia State in Sunday's second semifinal at 9:30 a.m. ET.
The Championship Match will begin at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and on the WatchESPN app.
