In this week's CCSA Weekly Spotlight, UNC Asheville junior Galen Broido (distance, IM) is interviewed in-depth to preview the coming CCSA 2014-15 season.

             Galen Broido is a junior on the UNC Asheville women’s swim team. Pursuing a degree in Management with a concentration in Marketing, Broido plans to graduate in May, 2016. She hopes to be a benefactor in the swim team’s success this upcoming year in the long distance events. Broido has a passion for sustainability and the conservation of the environment and hopes to one day work in a marketing department.

            Broido joined the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee her freshman year because she wanted to discover new ways to be involved, while meeting other student-athletes on campus. Elected as SAAC Secretary as a sophomore, she says she has enjoyed helping the leadership aspect of the committee by contributing to event planning and organizing. Broido is looking forward to improving SAAC meetings throughout the rest of her college career.For her senior year, Broido would like SAAC to become more involved with sport teams at local schools. In addition to that, she believes that winning the Homecoming Competition is a priority, as this was her favorite SAAC memory over the past two years.

            Last summer, Broido trained and competed with the University of Vermont. In addition, she raced in open water races and coached various clinics with the Vermont head coach Gerry Cournover. Throughout the summer, her goal was to positively affect whichever community she was placed in; Broido said that volunteering has alwasy been important to her. In high school Galen was also a Special Olympics coach

            Broido committed to UNC Asheville because she wanted to become part of the first freshman class of swimmers to be recruited at Asheville. She wanted to be somewhere new and different than where she had grown up. as well as being able to experience living in another part of the country while still living in the mountains.
