Davidson Men On Top After Day Two of 2013 CCSA Championship

ATHENS, Ga. (TheCCSA.com) - The Davidson College men are in first place with 629.50 points after the second day of the 2013 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at the University of Georgia Gabrielsen Natatorium. 

In the 200-medley relay, Gardner-Webb (Colin James, Drew Ellwanger, Matt Anderson and Cole Hickey) set a meet and Conference record with a time of 1:29.32.  Davidson (Ethan Levinson, Drew Onken, Will Fox and Wills Cooper) came in second with a time of 1:30.76, and College of Charleston (Michael McCarthy, Greg Karel, Chris Verboncoeur and David Sherrier) finished third with a time of 1:31.25. 

Onken defended his title in the 400-IM, recording a time of 3:52.47 and qualifying for the NCAA "B" cuts.  In second-place was Davidson's Grant Smith with a time of 3:57.64, and Pablo Ortiz of College of Charleston finished third with a time of 3:59.02. 

Fox won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.59, while Verboncoeur finished second with a time of 49.36.  Gardner-Webb's Dj Hughes' time of 49.79 was good enough for third. 

Winning the 200-freestyle was Davidson's Dylan Ludwick with a time of 1:38.21.  College of Charleston's Alex Wood and David Sherrier recorded times of 1:39.44 and 1:39.53 to place second and third, respectively. 

Ellwanger won the 100-breast with a time of 55.68, while Davidson's Thomas Bigham and Spencer Gill finished second and third with times of 57.67 and 57.69, respectively.

Gardner-Webb's Colin James won the 100-back with a time of 50.11.  College of Charleston's Michael McCarthy finished second with a time of 50.53, and Gardner-Webb's Jordan Denmark placed third with a time of 50.55.

College of Charleston's Peter Gibbons won the 1-meter diving event for the third consecutive year, as his score of 320.45set a meet and Conference record.  Brian McRae of Davidson placed second with 266.60 points, and College of Charleston's Michael Topitzer finished in third with 235.85 points.

Davidson (Onken, Ben Stewart-Bates, Grant Smith, Ludwick) won the 800-free relay for the sixth consecutive year.  The Wildcats posted a time of 6:40.19 to set a meet and Conference record.  College of Charleston (Woo, Verboncoeur, Joshua Shaffer and Sherrier) finished in second-place with a time of 6:41.70, and Gardner-Webb (Nathan Lile, Tate Warden, Denmark and Andy Watts) placed third with a time of 6:55.88. 

After day two, Davidson is in first-place with 629.50 points and College of Charleston sits in second with 567.50 points.  Gardner-Webb is in third with 500 points, while VMI is fourth with 219 points.  Rounding out the men's standing is VMI with 182 points.

The final day of the CCSA Championship will begin Saturday, Feb. 23 at 10:00 a.m., starting with the men's 200-yard backstroke preliminaries.  The event finals for day three will start at 6:00 p.m.
