The Howard University Bison honored five of their outstanding seniors on Saturday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium. In town for the competition were the Drexel University Dragons, a strong CAA opponent, fresh from their own Senior Day one week earlier.
On the scoreboard, the Dragons used their depth to defeat the Bison on both sides. The Lady Bison fell to the Lady Dragons 128-62 while Drexel downed the Howard men 156-39.
This day, though, was about the seniors, who have helped to build a program during their four years with the Bison. Zadok Isaacs led the seniors, maintaining his assault on the competition with his sprint free events. Isaacs provided the lone victory for Howard on the men's side and came within a fingernail of a second victory. Isaacs won the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.75, his 12th individual triumph of the year.
In the 50 freestyle, Isaacs finished within 0.01 seconds of the Dragons, but wound-up in second place with a time of 21.84.
Sophomore Trent Popovich had a great meet for the Bison. Popovich earned a second place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.71 was his best time of 2013. Of note was Popovich's 5:04.10 split in the 500 freestyle placing him 7th all-time at HU for the event.
The Lady Bison also had a senior on the victory stand on Saturday, along with three of her teammates. For the sixth time this season, the women closed the competition by dominating the 200 freestyle relay. In her final meet at Burr, senior E'lan Brewer teamed with juniors Janai Ederaine and Ashley Douglas and sophomore Briana Dillon to close the meet with a victorious time of 1:40.30.
Dillon earned two second place finishes on her own. First in the 1000 freestyle, Dillon worked through a tough stretch to earn a second-place time of 11:25.59. In the 100 backstroke, Dillon muscled her way to a time of 1:00.58, a season-best time for the sophomore. Brewer notched a second place showing of her own with a 2:04.65 in the 200 freestyle. Junior Camille Dykes also earned second place points in the 100 breaststroke with a season-best mark of 1:19.57.
Seniors Summer Davis, Kelvin Goodman and Darien Washington also swam well on the day they were honored. Davis' day was highlighted by a season-best split in her 100 butterfly (1:03.16.) Goodman notched a dual-meet best time of 1:05.59 while Washington led his 200 freestyle relay with a leadoff split of 24.51.
The Bison will next travel across the Potomac River to Arlington where they'll face Marymount University. That competition is on Saturday, January 26 at 1:00 p.m.
