Gardner-Webb's Men Perform at Wingate Quad Meet

Jordan Denmark won the 200 I.M. on Friday, and GWU men's swimming produced four top three individual finishes on Saturday to take third place in the men's team standings at the two-day Wingate Quad Meet.

The Runnin' Bulldogs collected 669 points for the weekend, finishing behind 2nd place Queens (746) and 1st place Wingate (773).

The Gardner-Webb men finished Friday's session with 308 points, sitting in third place behind Wingate (394) and Queens (344).

In the meet-opening 200 free relay, GWU secured a 6th place finish behind the swims of Joe MacGregor, Brandon Searle, Tate Warden, and Nathan Lile on the 'A' relay . MacGregor led off in 22.36, Searle split 22.07, Warden swam a team-best 21.36 clip in the third relay spot, and Lile closed in 21.98 for an overall time of 1:27.77.

Denmark gave GWU a win in the 200 IM, racing to a season best time of 1:53.12 to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the top spot in the event.  Seniors DJ Hughes  and Tyler Nuss added 5th (1:59.38) and 7th (2:00.35) place finishes respectively.

A freshman led GWU in the 500 free, as 3rd place finisher Luke Denman finished in 4:43.61 to hold on to the Top 3 finish.  Juniors Sam Wilson and Taft Kallam gave the Runnin' Bulldogs 10th (4:51.70) and 12th (4:54.37) place showings respectively.

In the 100 breast, senior Drew Ellwanger and Denmark finished back-to-back in 4th and 5th place, recording time of 58.70 and 58.85 respectively.  Junior Phil Leonard tacked on a 13th place finish after finishing with a time of 1:03.39.

Lile led the Runnin' Bulldog men in the next event, the 200 back.  A time of 1:53.18 in the event earned the freshman from Waynesville, N.C. a 2nd place finish.  Warden and Kallam added 7th and 8th place finishes, timing in at 1:58.50 and 1:59.20 respectively in what has proved to be a strong event for GWU.

MacGregor's 10th place showing in the 100 free paced GWU in the event, as the junior from Brooksville, Fla. recorded a time of 48.52.  Junior Matt Anderson was 15th with a time of 49.39, and fellow junior Cole Hickey finished 18th in 50.52.

In the 200 fly, Hughes's 4th place finish (1:57.51) paced the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event, followed by junior Cody Meyers' 8th place effort in 1:59.45. Nuss closed fast to finish 13th with a time of 2:03.04 in the event.

Gardner-Webb closed the night with a 3rd place showing in the 400 medley relay, getting fast swims from Denmark (52.47), Ellwanger (58.74), Warden (53.10) and Lile (47.57) to record a time of 3:31.88.

To open day two, the GWU men finished 3rd in the 200 medley relay.  Denmark led off in 25.06, Ellwanger split 26.60, Searle swam 23.39, and Anderson anchored in a season best 21.86.

In the 1000 free, Denman finished 3rd in 9:50.93, leading GWU in a distance event for the second time on the weekend.  Gardner-Webb also got a 9th place finish from Wilson in the event after finishing in 10:10.94.

Anderson sprinted to an 11th place finish in the 50 free, tops for GWU with a time of 22.30.  MacGregor followed in 12th at 22.34, and freshman John Drelich was next for the Runnin' Bulldogs, finishing 22nd with a time of 24.49.

Denmark continued a solid weekend with another Top 5 finish, this time in the 100 back.  The junior finished 4th, finishing fast for a time of 52.67.  Lile (53.54) and Searle (54.02) added 6th and 7th place finishes in a deep event for Gardner-Webb.

In the 200 breast, a season best from Ellwanger led the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event, as the senior sprinted home for a time of 2:11.28. Leonard (2:15.98) and Palmer (2:20.61) took 8th and 10th respectively.

Hughes' 51.25 effort in the 100 fly earned him a 2nd place finish in the event to lead GWU.  Warden followed in 3rd with a time of 52.51, and 5th place finisher Searle helped the Gardner-Webb men show off its depth with a time of 52.78.

In the 200 free, MacGregor sprinted out to an early lead en route to a 6th place finish in 1:48.17.  Lile followed in 7th with a time of 1:48.30, and Kallam took 11th in the event after finishing in 1:49.74.

The next event, the 400 IM, saw Gardner-Webb score 4th, 5th, and 6th place finishes. Warden sprinted home to record a time of 4:15.59 for the 4th place finish.  Denman (5th) and Nuss (6th) followed, earning Top 8 finishes with times of 4:15.61 and 4:16.06 respectively in another strong event for the Runnin' Bulldog men.

Gardner-Webb closed the meet with a 4th place finish in the 400 free relay.  Lile (48.88), MacGregor (48.12), Warden (48.26), and Denmark (47.37) combined for an overall time of 3:12.63 in the event.

Gardner-Webb men's swimming travels to compete in the Wingate Fall Frenzy Fri., Nov. 16 through Sun., Nov. 18.
